Scoring System
In pickleball, the scoring system follows a unique set of rules. The game is typically played to 11 points, and a player or team must win by at least a two-point margin. Only the serving team can score points. When the serving team wins a rally, they earn a point and retain the right to serve. If the receiving team wins the rally, they gain the right to serve but do not score a point immediately. The server always starts on the right side of the court and alternates sides after each point scored.
Serving Rules
Serving is a crucial aspect of pickleball, and there are specific rules to adhere to. The server must stand behind the baseline and hit the ball diagonally into the opponent's service court, which is the area on the other side of the net and on the opposite diagonal. The ball must clear the non-volley zone, also known as the "kitchen," without bouncing. If the serve lands outside the designated service area, touches the net, or fails to clear the kitchen, it is considered a fault, and the serve is lost.
Volley and Non-Volley Zone Rules
The non-volley zone, or kitchen, is a critical area on the pickleball court. Players are not allowed to volley the ball while standing inside the kitchen. A volley is hitting the ball before it bounces. However, players can enter the kitchen to hit a ball that has already bounced. After hitting a volley from outside the kitchen, players must immediately retreat out of the kitchen before the next shot is played. Violating these rules results in a point loss for the player or team.
General Gameplay Rules
During gameplay, the ball must bounce once on each side of the court before players can start volleying. If a ball hits the net and lands in the correct court area, it is still in play. A point is awarded when a player fails to return the ball within the court boundaries, hits the ball into the net, or commits a rule violation.
